Most lessons taught in CEA’s accredited online high school program teach excellent writing skills, including the three point thesis essay. Almost any essay for high school can be written in a 3point thesis, in 5 paragraphs. If you follow the three point thesis essay format, it is easy to complete a 500+ word essay that will meet most teacher requirements. I will use the example of a descriptive essay.
When writing a descriptive essay, you are trying to describe something whether it is a person, place, thing, event, historical or scientific explanation, a feeling, mood, a book, or anything else. Using the three point thesis essay format, when you write, the purpose trying to make the reader (usually your teacher), see it or experience it the way you do. Think about how something looks, feels, tastes, sounds and so on. Use as much detail as you can in your essay.
Most essays are about 500 words and have at least five paragraphs- meeting the Three Point Thesis Essay format:
- the introduction- your primary thesis
- three body paragraphs
- a conclusion paragraph that summarizes your paper
The introduction should contain your thesis statement as the last sentence of the paragraph. What is a thesis statement? A thesis statement declares what you think, believe or what you intend to describe and write about. A good thesis will help you focus your paper.
A thesis statement can sometimes be difficult to write. Here is a way to make it simple. Write what your paper is about and list three things to support it. The thesis statement needs to be in the middle, or at the end of your introduction. Each of the three things you write in your thesis statement will then become the topics for your three body paragraphs in your paper.
Example: The Beach at Sunset. First, you are writing about the beach at sunset- and why you chose to write about it. What kind of things do you want to talk about? Do you like the beach? Be ready to explain why you like sunsets in detail. If you like sunsets, then something like the colors of the sunset are a key point to your thesis statement, and one of your paragraphs. How does watching a sunset make you feel? What do you think about or dream about when you see a sunset at the beach? What sounds do you hear? Who is with you when watching a sunset? Once you have chosen three main things about sunsets at the beach, you can have three paragraph topics and you can begin to put it all together.
Here are a few examples of thesis statements. You body paragraphs should support your thesis statement. The conclusion paragraph should restate your thesis and indicate that you have finished what you wanted to say.
The beach at sunset is my one of my favorite times of day. The colors are so beautiful, it is peaceful and relaxing and I have time to remember the many things I am thankful for.
My favorite book is Little House on the Prairie. I love the all the characters in the story, it is interesting to learn what it was like to live back then, and my father read me this story for the first time.
There is nothing worse than having tuna noodle casserole for dinner. It smells bad, tastes bad, and all the ingredients used to make a tuna casserole feel gross in my mouth. Tuna casserole looks like something the dog threw up and it makes me gag!
The African Slave Trade has affected a very large part of the world. This phenomenon has been described in many different ways, such as slave trade, forced migration and genocide. The problem with these descriptions is that none of them accurately describe the African Slave Trade or it’s consequences because they are all biased points of views. Although none of the descriptions alone form a decent view on the subject, all three appellations seem to provide a more concise understanding of why the slave trade started and how it has affected so many people, societies and countries.
Once you have your thesis statement you can write the rest of your paper. Each paragraph will talk about a point you made in your thesis statement. It will make the paper flow better if you write about each point in the order it is in the thesis statement. Since the colors of the sunset is first in the first thesis statement that will be the first body paragraph. The second point will be the second paragraph and the third point the third body paragraph.
Each body paragraph explains the thesis statement in greater detail. What about the colors are beautiful? Describe it. Next, the second point; How is the sunset relaxing and peaceful? Explain why and how.

Sunsets make me feel wonderful at the end of each day because I can dwell on all the things I love and I am grateful for.

I would spend every day at the beach and watch every sunset if I could. There is no other place that makes me feel so relaxed and peaceful, where I can see something so amazingly beautiful at any time of year. The beach is the best place for me to take time out of my busy day and remember the things I am truly grateful for. For me, the beach at sunset is the best place to be.
